For everyone who has only recently joined up, but mostly for the hell of it, add me on Pottermore. I’m LeviosaShadow48.
Nobody in my family’s magic at all, it was ever such a surprise when I got my letter, but I was ever so pleased, of course, I mean, it’s the very best school of witchcraft there is, I’ve heard — I’ve learned all our course books by heart, of course, I just hope it will be enough — I’m Hermione Granger, by the way, who are you.
When Barry Fairbrother dies in his early forties, the town of Pagford is left in shock.
Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war.
Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils…Pagford is not what it first seems.
And the empty seat left by Barry on the parish council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who will triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity, and unexpected revelations?
A big novel about a small town, The Casual Vacancy is J. K. Rowling’s first novel for adults. It is the work of a storyteller like no other.
Actually, speaking of wands…
I kind of want to make my own custom wand, core and everything. My wand on Pottermore is ash, 14 1/2 inches, unicorn hair, unyielding.
Of course, I’ll likely have to modify the core seeing as I don’t really have access to any horses, or not any that I would like to incorporate into something as significant as a wand. I’m thinking the core will have to come from the wildlife rehabilitation center where I volunteer. We’ll have to see what I can come up with.
Now to find where I can find an Ash tree. :D
Update: quick look at my Florida Audubon book and White Ash trees are native to the area. Now for the hunt, haha. Oh gosh, I actually have things I’m supposed to be doing today, lol.
Update#2: I just want to reiterate how simultaneously lame and epic this quest is.
Update#3: So, maybe the tree isn’t quite in my area, but rather a bit further north. Camping in Ocala National Forest anyone?
And you know what? Here’s the other thing that bothers me. They’re really big on, you know, Pottermore has to be safe for kids….it has to be a family experience. And the truth is, look, Harry Potter fans are not kids. Why is this catering to the nine year olds, when it’s the people, sixteen, eighteen, and older, who shaped Harry Potter. JK Rowling’s not here to thank the nine year olds; she’s here to thank the people who bought the books, that were there at midnight, lining up, reading them over night. I mean this is ridiculous. AvisKey101—who is that!?
-Andrew Sims on Mugglecast Ep.#239 Feed Your Owl on the topic of Pottermore’s family friendly nature.
I agree completely (though ever so slightly less harshly).
First off, the Doctor’s time travel priorities including Harry Potter=win.
Expelliarmus literally have me jumping up and down giddily. This may be my favorite Dr. Who episode so fat solely due to the HP references.
