Atheists On Religion, Science, And Morality (The Point)

Can we prove there is no God? Does it make sense to equate religion with science? Do theists have a monopology on morality or is secular morality superior? Was Richard Dawkins right to bring up the religious beliefs of Republican Presidential Candidate Mitt Romney? Cara Santa Maria (Senior Science Correspondent, Huffingtonpost.com) leads this week’s panel on ‘The Point’ to discuss these issues and more with Michael Shermer (Publisher - Skeptic Magazine), Sean Carroll (Theoretical Physicist - Caltech), and Edward Falzon (author of ‘Being Gay Is Disgusting’). Special thanks to James Randi (Fopunder: James Randi Educational Foundation), Paul Zachary “PZ” Mayers (Blogger: Pharyngula.org - Professor U Of MN Morris), and AJ Johnson (Development Director for ‘American Atheists’) for sending in their points.

Do you think the Christian supporters at Chick-Fil-A Appreciation Day would have gotten angry if someone pointed out to them that they were waiting in line for hours just to get some cock in their mouths?

Anyone want to help me with my homework?

I have to ask people these two questions, then write a discussion post about the responses. I’d appreciate it if you could take some time to respond to them. :D

  1. Do you think people would live different if they did not believe in some form of afterlife judgment

  2. What would ethics look/be like without ‘the gods’?

This is just too fucking amazing.

Bill O'Reilly: You're not gonna persuade [Islamic extremist terrorists], because, by their very nature, they're nuts. They're crazy.
Sam Harris: They're actually not crazy.
Bill O'Reilly: Anybody who would kill themselves and think they're gonna get seventy-two virgins, um, you know, I gotta say, is insane.
Sam Harris: But it's actually no crazier than believing that a cracker literally turns into the body of Jesus. It has terrible behavioral outcomes, but it is equally unsupported by evidence.
Bill O'Reilly: No, no, no, no, I have to challenge you there. A cracker that people believe is the embodiment of Jesus hurts no one. It's a matter of faith. It's a positive thing for those who believe it, in the sense they try to love their neighbor as themselves. These people are going out killing--
Sam Harris: Right, different behavioral consequences.
Bill O'Reilly: There's a very big difference in that kind of faith.
Sam Harris: There's a very big difference in the outcome. There's no difference at the level of rationality.

“In order for Pokemon to advance in power, it has to evolve to another level. And each evolution, he becomes more demonic in appearance. And eventually he gets to the point where he’s totally demonic.”

“These are all oriental demons. The names are actually names of demons.”

Just… Just watch it. This is just one of the reasons I hate religion. I can’t believe people like this even exist. I wasn’t aware that “Jigglypuff” was a demon. Also, they start talking about how Minecraft is possibly “occult-ish”…

The only appropriate attitude to have about the big questions is not the arrogant certitude that is the hallmark of religion, but doubt. Doubt is humble. And that’s what man needs to be.

The God particle walks into a church…

I feel that this exludes a lot of stuff. Still interesting though.
